Thousands of horn flies may be present on one animal. These blood-feeders feed 20 to 30 times per day. Cattle bunch and expend considerable energy fighting these large numbers of flies and when they do, fail to graze normally. When horn flies are in check, calf weaning weights can show a 10- to 15-pound advantage.
