A septic tank will provide preliminary wastewater treatment. The tank must be sized to handle the wastewater load and installed properly. It requires periodic inspection and maintenance in order to treat wastewater and protect the environment and human health. The tank must be used in combination with an effluent treatment system. Additional Extension publications are available on various effluent treatment options including traditional and gravelless drainfields, mound systems and constructed wetlands.
