Management of Blister Beetles in Alfalfa

G1645
Published 2022

The bodies of blister beetles contain a lipid soluble blistering agent to which horses are particularly susceptible. Toxicosis by blister beetles is related to simultaneous cutting and crimping of hay when beetles are present. Eliminating blister beetles in alfalfa is difficult, so careful examination one feeding alfalfa may allow detection of beetles if present.
