When the heat is extreme, schedule cattle handling between midnight and 8 a.m.; never handle cattle in extreme heat after 10 a.m. Ensure water is adequate and shade and/or sprinklers are installed. Shift toward evening feeding and reformulate ration to lower the energy content by 5 percent to 7 percent or lower total feed intake to minimize overall metabolic heat load.
