No research specifically targeting closure of earthen manure storage structures exists, although most experts would agree doing nothing incurs an unacceptable environmental risk. Well-designed, constructed and managed structures pose little environmental risk.

By defining the steps necessary to implement facility abandonment, a plan meeting Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality review requirements can be assembled.
