The Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrel

G1964
Published 2009

Thirteen-lined ground squirrels are common throughout Nebraska and have both advantages and disadvantages. They benefit Nebraskans by feeding on many harmful weeds, weed seeds, and crop-damaging insects. They also create unsightly burrows in lawns, golf courses, cemeteries, parks and earthen dikes, besides digging up newly planted seeds, eating sprouting seeds and damaging garden vegetables. This NebGuide discusses how to recognize and prevent or at least manage 13-lined squirrel damage.
