Wholesale nurseries often propagate and overwinter many different kinds of herbaceous perennial plants in order to anticipate spring sales. The overwintering structures can range from low tunnels covered with Panda plastic (white on one side, black on the other) to unheated, plastic-covered hoop houses with thermal blankets to cold storage facilities. The choice of structure is based on cost and chilling requirements/tolerance of the herbaceous perennials. Given how strawberries are clonally propagated, grown and overwintered, they can also be fit into an herbaceous perennial production cycle. This publication describes how to incorporate strawberries into a wholesale nursery’s propagation, production, and overwintering cycle.
